Kuwait

Combining military and international travel has it's challenges. In our efforts to return to Kuwait to come home we missed our flight from Kuwait International Airport by 20 minutes. As a result we had 13 hours to kill before the next flight. We decided to take a cab into downtown and visit the world famous Souk Sharq Mall. this indoor mall has over 1,000 stores and includes virtually every up-scale store you can imagine. It was interesting to watch the Kuwaiti people doing what Kuwaiti's do every day.

It was clear however that we were in a Muslim country. We never saw a woman drive a car and the men and women would never sit together in the mall restaurants. When walking through the mall the local women also walked behind the men. We did however see a variety of dress including burkhas and western clothing.

Kuwaiti Cab Driver

We had a 13 hour layover in Kuwait coming home so we took a cab and went to the 1,000 store Souk Sharq Mall in Kuwait City. This was our cab driver.

Kuwaiti Home

The homes in Kuwait were typically lavish. Thanks to oil, there is great wealth in the country and it is very easy to see.

Kuwaiti's Relaxing

Here are two Kuwaiti's dressed in their traditional thobe relaxing at the very popular Souk Sharq Mall. The mall was damaged by an Iraqi missle attack in 2003.

Kuwait McDonalds Menu Item

I ordered one and it was actually very good.

Kuwait Harbor

At one end of the Souk Sharq Mall was this view of the Kuwaiti yacht harbor. There were many beautiful boats docked there.
